The Social Conflict in the Novel “Midaq Alley” by Najeeb Mahfooz

Abstract

Literature is a form of human thought and an attitude towards other human being and it is the mode from which we know the state of literature in its various eras in its strength or weakness, abundance or lack, we know it from the biographies of the writers. The writer reflects the social situation or position and presents us with his intellectual, social and philosophical position according to the situation. The constructive literature expresses nature, a direct expression that depicts human emotions, so that its likes or dislikes are raised in the hearts of readers and listeners. Najeeb Mahfooz is an Egyptian writer who has a social commitment to placing deep concern on issues of social injustice. “Midaq Alley” is one of the literary arts that denote realistic happenings. Najeeb Mahfooz tried to present in it a true deep picture of the environment in a small alley of Cairo. It is the story of the life of the people of the alley at a period of time during the Second World War. In it, he presents a strange group of creatures that live on the margins of life and society. It includes the social conflicts and images of society in fact.
