"The Aesthetic Dimensions of Linguistic Derivation in the Books of Divorce and Liʿān in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī"

Abstract

This paper investigates the role and beauty of linguistic derivation (ishtiqāq) in the Books of Divorce and Li‘ān within Sahih al-Bukhari. Linguistic derivation in Arabic serves as a powerful tool to convey complex legal and emotional meanings by connecting words through shared roots. In these two books, Imam al-Bukhari uses derived terms with precise semantic weight, reflecting both legal rulings and the emotional nuances of marital separation. Terms such as ṭalāq (divorce), liʿān (mutual cursing), farraqa (to separate), and nawā (to intend) are deeply rooted in Arabic morphology, and their usage in the hadiths and chapter headings demonstrates a harmonious interplay between linguistic form and legal context. This study highlights how such derivations enhance the clarity, coherence, and expressiveness of legal discourse in Hadith literature. By analyzing the morphological structures and their contextual applications, the paper uncovers the richness of the Arabic language in expressing delicate matters of personal status law.
